These delicious mussels have been farmed commercially in Penn Cove since
1995. They are planted in the early winter and are about one year old at
the time harvest begins.
They are harvested Sundays thru Thursdays for shipping five days per week,
Monday thru Friday. Customers receive them fresh from the water, cleaned,
graded and debearded, ready to go from the bag to the pot. They are
conveniently bagged in 5 lb., 10 lb., and 25 lb. units for food service, retail
or distribution uses.
Unique in appearance and flavor, they are known
as the Mediterranean mussel due to the fact that these are the same species of mussels
farmed in southern France, Spain, Italy and Greece. These mussels will grow to a
larger size making them great for serving stuffed, smoked or marinated, or even served on the half shell.
This type of mussel is more common further south on the Pacific coast in similar
Mediterranean latitudes, but they occur naturally in a few bays of Washington
State and are now farmed in select bays throughout the northwest.
